Ep12 High Plains Comedy Festival

It’s the 1st of the month, you know what that means!

… no not soul-smothering bills to pay, something mildly more entertaining —

It’s a new episode of the Casa de Haha podcast!

In my recent investigatory jaunt to LA an audiomaster called Ernie conveyed unto me the importance of releasing podcasts on a consistent schedule. As nice as it felt to keep hitting snooze, now I’m up. Consistency attracts consistent listeners, and I suspect the dual effect of a looming production deadline to keep me Greek yogurt regular.

Enjoy a whirlwind (sorry for the occasional wind) tour of my trip to Denver with podcast co-founder and now Denver-based comic Adrian Mesa as he performs at the first High Plains Comedy Festival.

All of the music is from a random jam by Adrian, me, and Denver’s nicest and most creative dynamo – Brandi Shigley.

Credentials, notebook, and D original album pre-order cock sock.

This was no ordinary music and comedy festival, this was Tenacious D’s music and comedy festival, and therefore the best music and comedy festival in the world. I covered this grand congregation of rhythmic hilarity for the Miami New Times. Please read my easily digestible, list-formatted, video punctuated, this is what they want because it’s all you’ll read, lovely article on the fest!

(There is a 20 minute video of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog’s performance. I will sip it like fine wine for years to come. [For me to poop on.])

Casa de Haha with SHORTS

Casa Oct. 8th

In stand-up comedy there are a handful of unwritten warnings. Performing during daylight, at non-comedy events, wearing shorts onstage..

We will test the limits of comedy by WEARING SHORTS ONSTAGE with proud calves shinning in the night. This could lead to disaster or paradise.

Come run the experiment!

Danver in Denver with Fanfare and Fervor

The time of times I had visiting Denver, Colorado! I gush rocky mountain enthusiasm into the 305 humidity!

I was given a grand reception from now Denver-based bro-ham Adrian Mesa, who has since reassimilated into the Denver comedy scene. And what a scene it is! Polished, creative, and encouraging, a scene full of benchmark gigs that comics of all levels are earnestly working towards. Refreshing like mountain dew, the actual thing. My trip was planned so I could perform at Adrian’s monthly food show podcast extravaganza, 3 Course Comedy, and watch Adrian perform in a brand new comedy festival, The High Plains Comedy Festival.

Mountains, new and old friends, great venue Deerpile, the caprese salad I made for the audience, extra legal herbs, and the guy that sells them.

Upward growing swamps called mountains, new and old friends, great venue Deerpile where I made the audience a caprese salad at 3 Course, extra legal herbs, and the guy that sells them.

High Plains is a homegrown festival masterminded by the reigning comedy team Grawlix. They welcomed not only big headliners (Reggie Watts, Kyle Kinane, Matt Braunger), and comics breaking through (Sean Patton, Kurt Braunohler, Grawlix themselves) but also featured much of the impressive local scene. It was refreshing to see such a spotlight on local talent at this festival, and could only have added to the shows being well-hosted, well-organized and well-attended. Well well well! Adrian introduced me to everybody who was funnybody in Denver, and after the ensuing whirlwind of hilarity, and potent stigma-free legal marijuana, I even remembered some of their names.

High Plains action! The first sign at Hi-Dive, Marc Maron drop by a live podcast, Matt Braunger, backstage at 3 Kings, the final show with Reggie Watts.

Such as the members of The Fine Gentleman’s Club. A group of Denver comics who are working hard to do comedy the way it should be done. They have a hallowed weekly showcase called Too Much Fun, which was indeed an overabundance of exuberance, hm! It felt like a sister show to my Casa de Haha – intimate sweaty room, curated show, receptive audience, LPs on the wall.

They welcomed me on their stage to do my first set in Colorado, and I thank them for that now with a humble gif…..t. The gift that keeps on GIFing.

More on Denver coming soon in the next episode of the Casa de Haha Podcast.

Ep11 Patrick Schroeder

Patrick Schroeder has been cleaning up and closing down FL comedy rooms for almost a decade. I catch him two days before he moves to New York for an audio journey interview that takes us through a science museum all the way to a science museum parking lot. The first half of the Schroeder/Wassermann Chronicles.

New York in the Schro-mmertime

South Florida’s Patrick Schroeder has made the holy pilgrimage to New York City. I recorded an interview with him for the next episode of the podcast, releasing this week. Here’s a preview — in GIF form.

It's.... SCHROTIME

It’s almost…. SCHROTIME

Until then, satisfy yourself with a clip from the last episode, and maybe listen to a full one?
